A play with music
Amidst the thieves and whores of London's underground, two shadowy figures reign supreme: J. J. Peachum, a man who sells licences to "professional" beggars; and the gangster known as Mack the Knife -- thief, murderer, and whoremonger. He has recently stolen the heart of Polly Peachum, the beggar king's daughter, inspiring the jealousy of his former girlfriend and current prostitute, Low-Dive Jenny, as well as Lucy Brown, the police commissioner's daughter... Set in Victorian London, and written in pre-Nazi Berlin, this is a musical with bite.
Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill turned to a translation by Elisabeth Hauptmann of John Gay's 18th-century "The Beggar's Opera" to fashion this savage, biting commentary on bourgeois capitalism and modern morality.
